As We Say Goodbye To 2010!

Thank you so much for a great year. Every single month we did higher numbers than the last, to the point there's now over 2,000 readers that come to illrapper.com every week. Slow and steady progress is a beautiful thing. From girls, to clothing and sneakers, to new music, to design and fashion, to random stories and personal accounts, I do my best to bring you an array of interesting stuff to check out every day, #nodaysoff. I see a lot and read and watch and study and listen and learn and 2 years ago I figured why the hell not share it all? Thanks for caring. All the best in 2011 and beyond! Salute, family!

Michael Donovan Shoots "Tear Sheet" for Factory Winter 2010

A really great almost collage of images using some familiar themes. Beautiful women, graphic design and photography featuring pieces by Lanvin for H&M, Calvin Klein and Charlotte Ronson to name a few. Styled by Miss Katie Burnett. Can't go wrong.

National Geographic Explains 7 Billion People In The World Concept

Interesting. Uses the fancy visual-word thing that became a popular concept in videos this year.

A lot of people in the world and only a relatively few of us doing anything worthwhile. That's just my take on it. Need to work smarter. Sorry, in one of those moods tonight.

Q&A w/ Jay-Z & Charlie Rose At The Brooklyn Museum

In addition to last months' one hour long conversation, Charlie Rose just put up another hour of Jay taking questions from the audience. From young to old, black to who-the-hell-knows, the span of fan is something else. Pretty remarkable.

Brad Pitt & Sean Penn Star In "The Tree of Life" (HD Trailer)

Didn't know a god damn thing about this film until I pressed play. I imagine the same goes for you. It looks beautifully shot and sounds very well written. Brad Pitt plays Sean Penn's father and that's all I know for now. Summer 2011.

"Unless you love, your life will flash by"

Christian Louboutin "Rollerboy Spikes" Beige Suede Spring/Summer 2011

Once again, I'd never personally wear these but I respect what they did in 2010. Shown here, in a new beige suede, I'm sure you'll see the likes of Pharrell and Swizz rocking these puppies with rolled-up jeans come Spring. Something incredibly chic and street about them I can't explain it. Don't judge me.

Dream Hampton Speaks On Jay-Z's Book Decoded

My friend Amk got me Decoded for Christmas and though I haven't had the chance to really eat through it yet, flipping through and reading a bit here and there I gotta say it's far more interesting than I ever expected. I damn near panned it when I first heard it was coming out. As a person whose been listening and understanding Jay-Z music for the last 10 years I didn't think there was anything this "book for white people" could teach me about my favorite rapper. I was an idiot. It's so much more than a book about some guys lyrics. There's an amazing backstory that feels like it's almost been forgotten this whole time, all these years. I share so much of the mans feelings regarding Hip-Hop and the youth its raised, this book is a nothing short of a gem. Life-changing. In the clip above, author Dream Hampton speaks on her involvement bringing the project to life.

88th Mifland x Phil.The.God

My man Phil is featured in the lookbook for leather goods Maker, 88th Mifland. But of course they'd put him in a big leather camera bookbag, haha. Only makes sense. He also did a quick video clip, set to my favorite song of the moment, you can watch here. Look for heavy work flow from the Philly-raised Director in 2011. This year was light. We only saw him introduce Diggy Simmons to the masses, help me sit through a Mickey Factz record, show us what else Ciara could do, tour with Lil Wayne and much more, haha. Sunrises for the g's though, Phil.

*Old Music* Syllables - Dr Dre feat. Eminem, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Ca$his

Didn't think this was legit but it sounds pretty done to me. It's just old. My guess is over two years. It's not bad but you can tell why it never got the official go. Will it live on your iPod?

Great looking content for Complex. I need the nigga Wolf to put out some undeniable material asap. I like his style too much to be so iffy on the music.

Limited Edition Ostrich Leather Leica M9

Psssst. And my loved ones don't know what to cop me for Christmas! Stop fucking around and go for broke! Haha. As 2010 comes to a close, another limited edition version of the M9 surfaces this time wrapped in ostrich leather complete with a matching strap. Fucking gorgeous. There's only 50 that have been made and they retail at $12,950 USD.

*New Music* Bigger Than Life - Nipsey Hussle feat. June Summers

*New Video* Latinos Presente - Tres Coronas feat. Gab Gotcha

This is some shit right here. I'm fresh from watching it all big and HD on my boy's new Apple TV, and a couple of my best friends did this whole thing up so maybe I'm a little biased but God damn, can you blame me?! Video's crazy good. I showed you the red carpet event they had for the premiere last week at Pure and today we bring you the official new video. I can't even say anything else, watch now!

Saw a really good behind-the-scenes clip by a certain INYCinema? Never heard of them but their access is awesome and they did a great job with the finished product. Shows the team in a light I've never seen them in, so proud. Watch it here.

URSUS Bape Duck Boots Spring 2011

Looking for a new pair of boots and I've been red-laced the fuck out! Haha. These are awesome. When I think about Duck boots I think of the classic L.L. Bean joints. There's probably no beating those but I like the updated all green version by the Bape boys. Not a lot of information is available yet but we'll bring it to you as soon as we know more.

Young Chris Issues Statement About Seizure At SOB's

Shout to Young Chris for real. He put out an assuring statement regarding his collapse at Sob's last night. Chalk it up to the unhealthy lifestyle of having your mind engulfed by one thing.

Dear Fans,

I am overwhelmed with the love and support I have been getting from family, friends and fans. I simply over worked myself. As I chase down success I have to take care of myself better while I am chasing my dream. I’m getting rest now and going to work towards having a better balance between work and health. Thank you to all those who were involved in helping and thank you to all the media for giving me priceless respect. I truly appreciate it. Your prayers are heard, Trust me. Love you all.

Hot Mop Films x Gab Gotcha x Tres Coronas Premiere "Latinos Presente" Video In Queens At Club Pure

Always a treat to see your peoples get the spotlight. Last night about 20 kids I've watched move through this industry through different stages of their career, had a packed house in Queens at club Pure for new-Wu rapper Gab Gotcha's album release party. Great food, drinks, red carpet, friends, family, goonies, bitches and hip-hop filled the room. Peace to everybody who made it out!!! Special shout out to the extended family, Hot Mop Films, and especially one of my best friends, director Ronin, on the premiere of his new Tres Coronas feat. Gab Gotcha video, Latinos Presente coming soon. I've seen the joint a few times and I gotta say it's pretty hard. On some New York Undercover vibe. The team's best work yet, hands down. Mothafuckin Rosky running around shaking hands in a Ralph Lauren suit! I see you Ro!

*New Mixtape* The Marathon - Nipsey Hussle

We love Nip over here. Still haven't downloaded this thing yet but I will later and talk about what I like. Sidenote: I hear the boy is having trouble with his deal through Epic and he's trying to get out of it. These label situations will have you fucked up, smh. Hold your head, family.

Aloe Blacc x MADE Creatives "Visions of Visionaries"

Me and the brother have the same lawyer and I hear he's been pushing for quite a long time. From the minute we heard the big song early this year I've had my eyes and ears on this guy, even doing a remix of the popular "How To Make It..." theme song. Really dope to see him in a better position now getting more recognition than ever before. Inspiring. Not to mention there's some great textures happening on his coat there. Berlin-based creative space MADE does the honours.

Yooo this is wild. I was only gonna post a link to this Fallon performance he did but I watched it and it's fucking great. The guy looks and moves like a classic soul artist. Legit, man. Much respect, you gotta watch.

"LIFE photographer gjon mili visited picasso in 1949. mili showed the artist some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates jumping in the dark—and picasso’s mind began to race. the series of photographs that follows—picasso’s light drawings—were made with a small flashlight in a dark room; the images vanished almost as soon as they were created.” – life.com

*New Video* Blow Your Smoke - Jim Jones feat. Rell

Strong video actually. I'm happy Capo went with a real artist instead of one of his goons on the block. Goldwatch understands hip-hop visuals in a special way. Jimmy’s upcoming CAPO album comes out in February 2011 but I'm not sure anyone cares.

60+ Blogs, 4,000+ Views In One Week - T.Shirt "Never LOL" (Official Video)

I didn't get to my personal goal of 5,000 views in the first week but I'm still pretty hype off the numbers we did so far. A lot of people reached out to me about this song/video and I'm crazy happy we could end the year so strong. Like I said before, nothing crazy concept-wise, just two New York kids on either side of the camera. Can't wait for all the dope shit planned for early 2011.

Robert DeNiro x Esquire Magazine "What I've Learned"

*New Music* Christmas In Harlem - Kanye West feat. CyHi Da Prynce & Teyana Taylor

I've been wanting to put this out for a minute now but the remix still hasn't been released! It's such a good record and I really hope someone gets on their job. Here's the deal, there's an official version on iTunes that I'm posting to listen to but it only features Cy Hi and the girl singing the hook, Teyana Taylor. There's other mixes available featuring Cam, Vado, Jim Jones, Pusha T and Big Sean, only thing is they have Flex's bombs all over them. There's no full version available with everybody on it in any kind of good quality, feel me? This is the best I could do. Tell me the hook isn't dumb classic.

RC Plane Flight Over New York City

My man showed me this the other day and I flipped my shit. It's so sick. As usual, I'm mad we didn't think of it first. The music makes the joint epic, oh man. Dreamed up by Team Black Sheep. WATCH NOW.

Shout to DarvinSilva.com for the heads up.

*Official Video* Curren$y - Daze of Thunder (Directed by Jonah Schwartz)

The boy does some street shit for his freestyle over the Ross joint. I'm not sure how much more footage of Spitta and one of his cars I can take but we'll let this rock.

Unrivaled ‘Hunter’ Jacket

Oh man this is gorgeous. Selectism has an unrivaled look at the jacket. The quilted body with the leather patchwork is so my taste. Only thing is you gotta know how to play it down. It's a busy piece and you don't wanna look like a crazy person. Plain light blue jeans and non-descript brown loafers or something. Black shades and that's it. Ok, lemme stop.

Jay Electronica x Respect Magazine Story

Kind of an unorthodox interview but I imagine getting something straight out of Jay is next to impossible. Still, insight nonetheless into what the last year has been like for the 34-year old newly signed rapper from the N.O. - Why he turned everybody down and signed to Jay and all, in his own words.

By the time March [2010] came, it was crazy. I coulda signed any kinda deal at that time. I coulda took these publishing companies to the cleaners. I met anybody you can think of. Like, I’m gonna entertain what you sayin’, but we already have a fundamental disagreement in the way that we view the music business and the treatment of people, period. I need to feel like I’m talking to my grandmother. I need to feel like I’m talking to my sister or my mama to feel comfortable. If I’m not at that comfort level then I’m completely uncomfortable. (Universal Records CEO) Monte Lipman was the first person that visited me. He was supposed to come by himself. He came with his whole office, and Mr. Chow’s or Philippe’s. I don’t even know what that is. I was like, Is this a surprise attack? He came in, walked around the apartment like he owned it. He said, “Yeah well we here today, I came here to make you a rich man today.” He said them exact words. I said, “Hold on man, first of all,” and I gave him the history of the white man 6,000 years ago to now, and let him know, “Wait a minute, my man, you’re in my house. You are a guest in my home.”

NY Times Article On Jump Associates "Creative Thinking"

This was the first thing I read this morning and it literally opened my eyes. The quick excerpt below should put you in the right space and I urge you to take a few and read the feature in it's entirety.

For years, the good manager was one who had data at their fingertips. What’s our sales in Peoria? ‘It’s actually 47 percent above last year.’ People say, ‘Oh, he’s a good manager.’ ” By the early ’90s, though, companies like Microsoft and SAP were selling software that digitized this task. The days when a manager at, say, the Gap could earn a bow just for knowing how many sweaters to ship to Seattle were over. “When that happens, what is the role of the manager?” Patnaik asks. “Suddenly it’s about something else. Suddenly it’s about leadership, creativity, vision. Those are the differentiating things, right?” Patnaik draws an analogy to painting, which for centuries was all about rendering reality as accurately as possible, until a new technology — photography — showed up, throwing all those brush-wielding artists into crisis. “Then painters said: ‘Well, wait, you can tell what is but you can’t tell me my impression of what is. Here’s how it looks to me, like Seurat. Or the Cubists who said, ‘You can’t capture what is going on from multiple angles.’ ” Technology forced painters to re-evaluate, which transformed their work. Something similar has happened in corporate America. As Patnaik puts it, “We’re in the abstract-expressionist era of management.”

J.Cole Interview w/ [Elliott Wilson's] Respect Magazine

Haven't got a chance to read it in full yet but I figured I'd put it in a spot I can easily get to. From what I've seen and read so far EW is doing a really great job on the premiere issue. Let's hope he can get the thing to sell, get nice and comfortable in 2011 and bring us more great Hip-Hop culture content.

Here's a choice excerpt about Cole coming to the Big Apple for college with an alterier motive:
How much of a culture shock was it when you moved to New York?
It was crazy. Ridiculous. On my own, bro. I was fuckin’ silly. I remember my best female friend from high school used to ask me, ‘You going to New York? You crazy? Aren’t you scared?’ And I used to front. But man, I was 18 years old going to somewhere I’d never really been. Living in a dorm—all I knew was living with my moms up until that point. For me to do that, it really just took, like a blind confidence that I didn’t really have, but I was telling myself I had it. The first time I came to New York I told myself that I was gonna move there. I just knew. I visited once when I was 13 or 14. I said, ‘I’m gonna move here one day.’ I didn’t really know ‘til probably about 16 or 17. I was like, I can go to school in New York, college. It clicked I guess [snaps fingers]. Like: college. I could do it. It was almost like an excuse to go to New York City, and nobody’s even gotta know what I’m going for. Because I wasn’t telling people, ‘Yeah I’m gonna go get a deal.’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna go to college in New York.’ But inside I knew what it was for.

Sofia Coppola's New Film "Somewhere" Lecture at Apple Soho December 16th

Really very interested in this film. In my opinion Sofia is the type of artist able to make rich stories rooted and surrounded in muted artsy fashion. I've seen the preview of this one, you can watch here, and it's no different. Excited cause AMK informed me Ms. Coppola will be at Apple Soho this Thursday, the 16th at 6PM discussing her new film in the lecture hall. More information can be found here.

NY Times Piece "Straight Outta Hoboken" Compares Frank Sinatra And Jay-Z

Just a real interesting read pitting the original (and incomparable in my eyes) Mickey Blue Eyes Sinatra to the biggest and best rapper ever to do this shit, Jay-Z. Even more than a mere comparison, the article takes a leap into defining what an artist like Sinatra meant to the people. Truth, it seems, is the common thread.

It's the best time of the year to put clothes on and I mean that in more ways than one. You're gonna see a lot of posts coming up of pieces I like and you're just gonna have to deal with it. Designer Takeshi Ohfuch did a great thing with this quilted “calico stripe” vest. It looks like something a GQ-reading Santa would wear. Plus it's made in N.Y. which is awesome.
